About Liberty Head Quarter Eagles
When this design was first struck in 1840, it was the smallest circulating gold coin officially issued by the United States Mint. Requiring only a limited amount of precious metal, the quarter eagle was popular among the branch mints. Certain curiosities within the series are known, such as the unrecorded mintage of the 1841 coins from Philadelphia, the few coins counterstamped “CAL.” in 1848 honoring the first gold ores brought back from the West Coast, and the occasional low mintage branch mint productions.
