The longest serving design of the quarter dollar is a remarkable illustration that began as an homage to the nation’s first commander-in-chief. Born as a product of the Great Depression, the commemorative Washington Quarter proved so popular that his image on the coin was retained for the decades to come.
Originally struck in 90% silver with a balance of copper, the coin served as an everyday piece by most Americans. Small initial mintages broke into the millions per year for each Mint and even larger production counts thereafter. With Washington’s head on the obverse, the denomination would eventually become the first since the Barber series to have pieces made and issued for general circulation by all co-existing Mints by the year 2019.
