Following the successful introduction of the Half Dime and the Dime of the same design, the Seated Liberty Quarter began its own lengthy run in 1838. The obverse bore the same feature of Lady Liberty sitting on a rock with a pole holding a cap in her left hand and her right hand resting on a Union shield below. The reverse retained many of the features of the previous quarter design, notably the country’s name surrounding an eagle perched with three arrows and an olive branch. A distinct change was made to have the denomination spelled out as “Quar. Dol.” rather than “25 C.”
