Coins of the New Orleans Mint

The City of New Orleans was built by French colonials in 1715 and served as the local capital of the expansive Louisiana territory. The city enjoyed close proximity to the flowing silver mines of Mexico and access to the interior of North America. After the American Revolution, the region was only maintained by France until 1803, after which it was sold to the young United States.

The British attempted to take the city during the War of 1812. A younger and promising General Andrew Jackson successfully defended the city in one of the last major battles of that continent-wide conflict. Jackson would later become the seventh President of the United States. It was during his tenure and as a result of his policies that led to the creation of the New Orleans Mint.
