Gold has been a valuable material for longer than any other substance or entity in the history of human civilization. Born as a result of explosive supernovae and sprinkled throughout the surface of the Earth, nearly every kingdom, country, and political state since the ancient era has used gold as a currency in one form or another. The precious metal was considered to be a form of wealth and drove many political and armed forces to obtain more of it. Eventually the mines of the Old World were no longer sufficient and the promise of gold in the New World fueled the Age of Discovery.
