About Liberty Head Eagles

Among the most challenging series to collect but perhaps just as historically important, obtaining a set of coinage of the Liberty Head Eagle series is a testament to the seriousness of the numismatist. This series requires a level of patience and budgeting beyond that needed by most any other types of United States Coins.

The Eagle denomination had last been minted for commerce back in 1804, being suspended thereafter by Thomas Jefferson along with the standard silver dollar. During the Eagle’s hiatus, the fineness of gold coins was changed from 91.67% gold, which matched British gold coins of the time, to 90% which was maintained all the way through 1933. The weight of the Eagle was reduced from 17.5 grams to 16.718 grams when the new Liberty Head series debuted.
