About Liberty Head Double Eagles

With the advent of the California Gold Rush, the massive boost to gold reserves allowed for a creation of a new denomination for regular commerce - the Double Eagle. This coin bears a face value of twenty dollars and contained 0.9675 ounces of gold. The design of the coin featuring the head of Liberty surrounded by thirteen stars on the obverse and a rendition of the Great Seal on the reverse was illustrated by Chief Engraver James B. Longacre. For much of the coin’s history it was minted in surplus numbers and each available Mint facility contributed to its population. In 1866 the motto “In God We Trust” was added to the reverse. Under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt, the type was replaced in 1907.
