About Mercury Dimes
There may be no design more beloved than that featured on the dime from 1916 to 1945. The so-called “Mercury Dime” is an iconic piece of the 20th Century renaissance in American Numismatics and has its place in history, stretching across two World Wars, the Roaring Twenties, and the Great Depression. It continues to serve as a reminder of those younger days and as one of the most collectible series among collectors today.
This chapter of the dime’s history retained its common composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. Striking of examples took place at Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco, and was produced every year with the exception of 1922, 1932, and 1933. Many of the regular issues were produced in high enough numbers to be readily available today for both the silver investor and the set enthusiasts. A few rare dates still drive the market.
