The silver five cent piece is among the first denominations struck by the United States Government after the passage of an Act of Congress in 1792 authorizing the establishment of a Mint in Philadelphia. The coin would be struck in four designs and at three different Mint facilities until its discontinuation in 1873.
Although the first coins in the series are dated 1794, the half dime was not struck until 1795. Both the Flowing Hair design and the Draped Bust design had a composition of 0.8924 fine silver and a diameter of 16.5 millimeters. Of the nearly 250,000 half dimes originally produced, fewer than 6,000 are estimated to survive.
