Gold Commemoratives
of the United States
Long before the modern era, the average circulating coin in the United States did not show a Founding Father, President, or Monument, but rather unique and allegorical depictions of the goddess Liberty and symbolism for the nation’s produce or political themes. A historical figure would not show up on any coin until 1892 when Christopher Columbus was engraved on a half dollar issued and sold at the Chicago World Fair.
Commemorative coinage continued in stints from then on out. A lone quarter dollar featuring Queen Isabella of Spain debuted in 1893, followed by a silver dollar honoring General Lafayette in 1900. Gold coinage would be seldom used for these commemoratives. Half Dollar production reached a peak in the 1930s.
