About Switzerland
Sitting in the center of Western Europe, the landlocked nation of Switzerland has been a site for human habitation for over 150,000 years. The country and its people have experienced the history of Europe in a unique way that helped establish their modern identity.
The first coins of a modern Switzerland appeared in 1850 following the international recognition of the country as a federal state. Coinage was intended to take place at the Mint in Bern, however in those early years the facilities in Paris, Brussels, and Strasbourg were contracted for production. The first set of issues included coins made in bronze, billon, silver, and gold.
The One Rappen is the smallest value assigned to a coin. The majority of the issues were struck at the Bern Mint, however a select few were made in Paris in 1851. Mintages were generally high for the series, though the 1896-B production is extremely low and highly sought after. The coin was struck in bronze except during the years 1942 to 1946, during which time it was struck in zinc. The denomination was discontinued in 2006 and withdrawn in 2007.
