About Great Britain Sovereigns
The Islands of Great Britain have been known to humankind for nearly a million years, first settled by prehistoric explorers as they branched out from their earlier abodes. Over the millennia, countless cultures and kingdoms have risen and fallen. The United Kingdom as we know it today is built on this rich history.
The lands themselves are ancient and formed along with the rest of the European continent. Up until about 6,500 years ago, Great Britain was connected to the mainland by a land bridge that became submerged as the last major glaciers receded and global sea levels rose. Cultural legends persist even now about the lost lands.
About Great Britain Sovereigns of Victoria
The Sovereign is the standard gold coin issued by Great Britain. Composed of 0.917 fine gold and containing 0.2355 ounces thereof, it has been minted for each monarch since George III. The popularity of the coin has allowed for it to be minted in London, Australia, India, and South Africa.
About Great Britain Sovereigns of George V to Date
The first Sovereign was minted in 1489 during the reign of Henry VII. These
original pieces contained more gold than their contemporary counterparts and thus were worth slightly more in trade. The last one of these issues was struck in 1603 under the auspices of James I who replaced the coin with the Guinea.
