About 4 Reichspfennig
Germany’s second major era after unification is often referred to as the Weimar Republic. Upon the close of World War I, the old German Empire was dissolved and this new regime was in existence from 1919 to 1933. Notable aspects of the Republic were its democratic form of government involving multiple parties, its leadership under a President and a Chancellor, and its struggles to pay war reparations.
Hyperinflation and geopolitical isolation further affected the reborn Republic. Internal instability was marked by political murders and two attempted coups d’etat. In 1923 alone, the purchasing power of the Mark fell sharply and it was not uncommon to see base metal coins with face values in the hundreds of thousands. The government held firm and by 1924 monetary policy was restructured. Germany joined the League of Nations and accepted all changes ordered by the Treaty of Versailles from 1919.
As the Great Depression unfolded, Germany was hit especially hard. Unemployment was skyrocketing and inflation was returning. The nation was forced to take unusual methods to combat the situation, among which was introducing the 4 Reichspfennig coin to reduce reliance on producing the more costly 5 Pfennig piece.
