About Australia Half Sovereigns
Long before the country of Australia was formally recognized, the
resources of the nation-to-be were utilized to coin half sovereigns and full sovereigns in native gold. The design of these coins is identical to their British counterparts with only a mintmark tucked away in the relief of the reverse to distinguish the individual coin’s origins. Nevertheless, the coins were struck in 0.917 fine gold and issued throughout the reigns of Victoria, Edward VII, and George VI. Several of the annual mintages were modest outputs by either Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth, though the final production of 1918 is rather enigmatic.
